EPPING, NH- The tradition
continues this Saturday night
with the 47th running of the
ISMA Supermodified Classic at
the Star Speedway in Epping, New
Hampshire. This is the highest
paying and also most anticipated
event on the ISMA schedule that
will also bring arguably the
largest field of the fastest
short track cars on pavement to
the quarter-mile.
Front and center in this years
field is Russ Wood Sr., from
Pelham, N.H., who led all 150
laps in last years event to tie
the legendary Bentley Warren for
the most Classic victories with
six. A win on Saturday night
separates him from the many
legendary drivers who have won
this special event.
His competition might have
something to say about it
though, with NASCAR Truck Series
past Champion Johnny Benson in
the field at Star. Former
Classic winners Joe Gosek from
Oswego, N.Y., and area standout
Justin Belfiore will also be in
contention, along with the ISMA
regulars such as Lou Cicconi and
Rob Summers.
The Star Classic is always a
crowd pleaser, with the cars
circling the track in less than
12 seconds per lap. For Wood,
who now competes regularly at
Star in a tour-type Modified
after starting his career at the
Hudson Speedway before traveling
with the Supermodified tour,
this is by far his biggest event
of the season.
"I love Star Speedway and there
is no race anywhere like the
Star Classic," Wood admits.
"It's a very challenging race,
lapping cars on a track that
size, but it makes winning there
that much more special. To be
mentioned alongside names such
as Bentley Warren and Chris
Perley as a Classic winner
really means something."
Racing begins on Saturday at
5:05 PM with qualifying events,
and the ISMA time trials set to
begin at approximately 5:45 PM.
Also on the schedule are the
Outlaw Late Models, Strickly
Stocks and Road Runners.
Star Speedway is located on
Route 27 in Epping, just five
minutes from the Roure 125 exit
off of Route 101. For more
